Time To Show What We Have Learned

Posted on April 10th, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

What a busy 4 day week at WIS!  Our students and teachers have been busy making a final push to make sure we are ready for MAP testing next week.  WIS is confident that our students have the knowledge and preparation to continue the tradition of excellence we have established in past years.  A reminder that test dates are Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (4/14 and 4/15) for both grades and Thursday (4/16) for 5th grade.  Please make sure your student is prepared by getting plenty of rest and eating a healthy breakfast on those days.

Today our students and teachers had the privilege of hearing a great motivational speaker to help get everyone pumped up for next week.   Willard graduate and professional boxer B.J. Florez spent some time with us this afternoon.  Through his hard work and dedication he has become one of the best boxers in the world.  We know his words of wisdom and life experiences will not only get our students in the right mind-set for MAP testing but also as they continue their journey toward adulthood.

A reminder for everyone to continue to “Pay it Forward”!

MAP Quickly Approaching!

WIS is back to business after a relaxing spring break!  Along with every other school in the state we are making a final push in preparation for the state MAP tests.  Students and teachers are reviewing concepts to make sure WIS in on our “A” game for testing.  MAP Test dates are as follows:

Tuesday 4/14 – Communication Arts
Wednesday 4/15 – Mathematics
Thursday 4/16 – Science (5th grade only)

WIS will be kicking off MAP testing with a school wide assembly on Monday 4/13.  We are looking forward to some special guests and musical performances!  Students will be earning “points” during testing for positive behaviors that can be redeemed for extra recess and a cook out.

Today several students participated in the planting of a tree near our building.  This was in observance of National Arbor Day.  A special thanks to Miss. Ellis for coordinating this activity.

Our students continue to “Pay it Forward”.  Every morning this week an example of how someone has done this was read during our morning announcements.  It is great to hear the stories of how our students have done small things to positively impact the lives of others.  Keep up the good work!

Enjoy your Spring Break!

Pay it Forward

Posted on March 20th, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

What a day to be a part of WIS!  Our student council kicked off our “Pay it Forward” initiative with a building wide assembly today.  If you are not familiar with this concept or have not seen the 2000 movie here is the basic idea:  do something you would not normally do to help someone else but they cannot pay you back, they instead must pay it forward to someone else.  They in turn do the same for someone else and the “good deed” is potentially passed on indefinitely.  The goal of this is to make our schools, homes, and community a more positive place one kind act at a time.

Today each student received a “Pay it Forward” bracelet to help remind them of what they are now a part of which they can then give to someone else.  Although participation is completely voluntary we hope each student chooses to be a part of this.  Our student council developed, implemented, and funded this entire plan.  We want to thank each of its members for allowing us to be a part of it !  Thanks also to our student council sponsors that have put so much time and effort in to make this possible!!

4th Quarter already?

Posted on March 13th, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

12 students from WIS are the proud owners of new digital cam-corders from our 3rd quarter iChoose assembly on Friday.  These students exemplify the “above and beyond” mind-set that the program is built around.  Way to go!  Thanks to all of our sponsors that have made this program possible!

Several pieces of our new playground equipment are in and plans are currently in the works to get them installed.  Be looking for this to happen in the near future.  Our PTO has made this plan a reality and WIS is very appreciative!

Students received their 3rd quarter grade cards this week.  Please take some time to go over this with your student and contact us if you need more specific information.

It is hard to believe that we are already talking about 4th quarter but it is here.  Encourage your child to keep up their efforts and positve attitude.  Summer is in sight!

A reminder that school will be in session on Monday 3/23 as another of our make up days.

Welcome to March!

Congratulations to 5th grader K. Raby for winning our building spelling bee.  He survived the classroom, team, grade level, and building competitions to earn this honor.  He will represent WIS later this month at the area wide KY3 spelling bee.  We wish him good luck!

As many of you are already aware, the Willard North and WIS chiors will be performing at the Springfield Cardinals game on Saturday April 25th at 2:00.  Everyone is invited to join us at the game that day.  Our music teacher, Mrs. Morris, is coordinating the sale of these tickets.  Students were given order forms last week.  Ticket price is $7 and orders need to be in by Friday March 13th.  We would love to see you there!

A reminder that 3rd quarter ends Monday the 9th.  Grade cards will go home with students on the 12th.  Our 3rd quarter iChoose reward assembly will be on the 13th.

Don’t forget to set your clocks forward for Daylight Savings time.

Spelling Bee Heats Up!

It seems that our early spring weather has come to an abrupt end. It was great while it lasted! WIS has been suffering through our first real bout of illness this year. We have had many students and teachers absent due to illness. We encourage everyone to practice good hand washing and to get plenty of rest.

Coach Highfill has our students pumped up about the Hoops for Hearts competition. This is a great program that benefits the American Heart Association. Be looking for your student to bring home information.

Our building spelling bee competition continues this week as we look to crown our building champion that will represent WIS in the KY3 bee next month. Some of the team and grade level competitions have been brutal with the students exhausting over 100 words before finding a winner. Good luck to everyone!

DARE, Spelling Bee, and more happening

Posted on February 23rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

The second DARE graduating class of this school year was recognized on Tuesday night.  Congratulations to the 5th grade students of the Green and Maroon teams for successfully completing this 10 week program.  A special thanks to Willard mayor Jamie Schoolcraft for helping with the keynote speech and to Chief Tom McClain for continuing to give of himself and his time to make this program a reality.  We know our students are better prepared to make positive choices in their lives.

WIS is in the middle of our annual spelling bee.  Most classrooms have already selected their representative and team level competitions are in the works.  Each team representative will then compete in our building spelling bee on Friday February 27th.  The building winner will then participate in the area wide KY3 competition in March.  Good luck to everyone involved!

Our student council has been pondering ways to best spend the proceeds from our very successful WIS skate night.  After discussing several great ideas they have settled on one that will have a huge positive impact on both WIS and the community as a whole.  Be looking for more information on this to come your way in the near future.

Today our staff and students took some time to enjoy the festivities of Mardi Gras.  Colorful beads, feathery masks, and great food made today a fun Friday to be at WIS.

6th grade schedules

Posted on February 23rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

This week (Tuesday, Feb 24-Fri, Feb 27), our middle school counselors will be here talking with all of our 6th graders about their schedule for next year.  All 6th graders will be bringing the schedule form home, along with a class description list, so that parents will be able to see all of the electives available to their child.  Parents must sign the schedule form before students turn those back in to their homeroom teacher.

It was a warm February day…………
