Spelling Bee Heats Up!

Posted on February 27th, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

It seems that our early spring weather has come to an abrupt end. It was great while it lasted! WIS has been suffering through our first real bout of illness this year. We have had many students and teachers absent due to illness. We encourage everyone to practice good hand washing and to get plenty of rest.

Coach Highfill has our students pumped up about the Hoops for Hearts competition. This is a great program that benefits the American Heart Association. Be looking for your student to bring home information.

Our building spelling bee competition continues this week as we look to crown our building champion that will represent WIS in the KY3 bee next month. Some of the team and grade level competitions have been brutal with the students exhausting over 100 words before finding a winner. Good luck to everyone!

Upcoming events: PTO meeting 3/5 at 6 PM 3/9 3rd quarter ends 3/12 grade cards go home

DARE, Spelling Bee, and more happening

Posted on February 23rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

The second DARE graduating class of this school year was recognized on Tuesday night.  Congratulations to the 5th grade students of the Green and Maroon teams for successfully completing this 10 week program.  A special thanks to Willard mayor Jamie Schoolcraft for helping with the keynote speech and to Chief Tom McClain for continuing to give of himself and his time to make this program a reality.  We know our students are better prepared to make positive choices in their lives.

WIS is in the middle of our annual spelling bee.  Most classrooms have already selected their representative and team level competitions are in the works.  Each team representative will then compete in our building spelling bee on Friday February 27th.  The building winner will then participate in the area wide KY3 competition in March.  Good luck to everyone involved!

Our student council has been pondering ways to best spend the proceeds from our very successful WIS skate night.  After discussing several great ideas they have settled on one that will have a huge positive impact on both WIS and the community as a whole.  Be looking for more information on this to come your way in the near future.

Today our staff and students took some time to enjoy the festivities of Mardi Gras.  Colorful beads, feathery masks, and great food made today a fun Friday to be at WIS.

6th grade schedules

This week (Tuesday, Feb 24-Fri, Feb 27), our middle school counselors will be here talking with all of our 6th graders about their schedule for next year.  All 6th graders will be bringing the schedule form home, along with a class description list, so that parents will be able to see all of the electives available to their child.  Parents must sign the schedule form before students turn those back in to their homeroom teacher.

It was a warm February day…………

Spring Weather in February?

Posted on February 13th, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

OK.  I know the groundhog saw his shadow last week but it sure does not feel like winter outside.  It has been great for our students to get out and enjoy the nice weather!

This week we saw mid-quarter reports go home on Tuesday.  Please take time to go over these with your student and contact the school with any questions you might have.  Thursday afternoon the halls were filled with the wonderful smells of our cooking club as they cooked up some great Japanese cuisine.  Across the hall our science club got to experience some great hands on experiments with the help of the folks from Mad Science.

Today the building is full of pink hearts and candy-grams for Valentine’s Day.  Our students are looking forward to the classroom parties at the end of the day.  Thanks to all our homeroom parents that have volunteered their time and money to make these possible!

WIS Skate Night!

Posted on February 8th, 2009 in Uncategorized by wisdavis

Our second annual Student Council WIS Skate Night was a huge success!  We had over 340 students, teachers, and parents present for this fun night together.  A special “thanks” to our Student Council sponsors for making this possible.  Congratulations to 5th grader Z. Tucker for winning $200 today in our fundraiser reward assembly.  He sold 66 tubs of cookie dough which earned him the opportunity to participate in a game of “Deal or no Deal”.

Today we recognized our honor roll, perfect attendance, and character awards at our first semester honors assembly.  Well over 30% of our student body earned all A’s and B’s for the first semester.  Way to go!  We appreciate all the parents and family members that came out to help us honor these students.

This week was National School Counselors Week.  We want to thank our counselors Mrs. Skaggs and Mrs. Johnson for all they do for WIS.  They are a vital part of our building and we want them to know that they are truly appreciated!
